“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east.”
Ezekiel 47:1
There are seasons when God brings you to a doorway, and you know something is changing before you fully understand what. Something behind you seems to be ending. Something ahead is beginning. And you’re standing somewhere in between, on the threshold itself.
It’s tempting to think of a threshold as simply a doorway — a place you pass through quickly on your way to somewhere more significant. Arrival is what matters. The threshold is just the crossing.
Then Ezekiel 47 offers a detail easy to read past. The river Ezekiel sees doesn’t begin out in the valley. It doesn’t begin in the city. It doesn’t even begin deep inside the sanctuary. It begins at the threshold — right at the door, at the exact place of transition.
That reframes what standing at a threshold actually means. It isn’t empty waiting room time before the real thing starts. It’s where the river begins. The transition itself is already flowing with something, even before the destination is visible.
If you’re standing at a threshold right now — a transition you can feel but can’t yet fully name — it’s worth asking what’s already beginning to flow here, rather than only asking what’s waiting on the other side. You don’t need to know everything ahead. You only need to know the One leading you across.
Prayer
Father, thank You that Your river begins at the threshold, not only after I’ve fully crossed it. Help me notice what’s already flowing in this transition rather than treating it as empty space. I don’t need to see everything ahead — I only need to know You are leading me across. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
The threshold is not the destination. Sometimes it is simply the place where the River begins.
