Refuge, Not Escape

There's a real difference between refuge and escape. Some of the deepest encounters happen when God teaches you to find Him within what hasn't changed yet.

“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings.”

Psalm 17:8

There’s a real difference between refuge and escape, even though they can look similar from a distance. Escape says: get me out of this. Refuge says: keep me while I walk through this. One asks for the circumstance to change. The other asks for a presence to hold steady inside it.

David wasn’t writing this psalm from safety. He’s distressed, surrounded, aware of adversaries and pressures he genuinely cannot control. And in the middle of that, he doesn’t primarily ask for rescue. He asks to be hidden — under the shadow of wings, close enough to feel covered rather than merely informed that help is coming eventually.

Some of the deepest encounters with God happen exactly this way — not when circumstances change immediately, but when He teaches someone how to find Him within what hasn’t changed yet. That’s a different kind of answer than the one usually prayed for, and it can take time to recognize it as an answer at all.

If what’s needed right now feels less like an explanation and more like simply being kept — covered, close, safe enough to stop interpreting every threat and release what can’t be controlled — that’s not a lesser prayer than asking for rescue. Sometimes it’s the more honest one.

Prayer

Father, hide me under the shadow of Your wings today. I’m not asking You to explain everything or fix it all right now. I’m asking to be kept, covered, close enough to stop interpreting every threat on my own. Teach me to find You inside what hasn’t changed yet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Declaration

I am safe enough beneath the Father’s wings to stop striving and remain tender enough to trust again.
