There’s a way of reading the Gospels that treats them mostly as instruction — commands to obey, principles to apply, a strategy for living well. All of that is there. But sitting with the words of Jesus slowly, without rushing toward application, tends to surface something else first.
He doesn’t always speak first to plans, assignments, or productivity. Sometimes He goes straight to the heart, and everything else waits its turn.
The disciples in the boat that night weren’t looking for a strategy meeting. They were terrified, straining at the oars against a contrary wind, and then someone was walking toward them on the water. Jesus’ first words weren’t instructions. They were reassurance. Take heart. It is I. Do not be afraid.
That’s worth noticing about how He tends to meet people — not always with the next step first, but with the heart first. Fear addressed before strategy. Identity confirmed before assignment given. Presence established before anything is asked.
If prayer lately has felt like a place to bring requests, plans, and problems to be solved, it might be worth pausing there and simply sitting with what He says to the heart before moving on to what needs to be figured out. He rarely starts where the to-do list starts.
Prayer
Lord, before I bring You my plans and my problems, let me hear what You say to my heart first. Take heart. It is You. I don’t need to be afraid. Slow me down enough to receive that before I rush ahead to what needs figuring out. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
Jesus speaks to my heart before He speaks to my plans. I will sit with what He says first.
