“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9
There’s a particular kind of disappointment that comes from watching something promising fall through — a role that seemed like exactly the right fit, a candidate who checked every box, a plan that had already been mentally built out, only to have it withdraw at the last moment for reasons entirely outside anyone’s control.
The instinct in that moment is usually to move straight to strategy — what’s the next step, who else could work, how quickly can this gap be filled. All reasonable questions. But there’s a step worth taking first, even briefly: bringing the disappointment honestly to God before bringing it to the whiteboard.
Proverbs describes a partnership between human planning and divine establishing — plans genuinely matter, and yet something beyond those plans is also genuinely at work, shaping the actual steps in ways that aren’t always visible from inside the disappointment.
Disappointment brought honestly to God first, before it’s brought to strategy, tends to land differently than disappointment processed alone. He isn’t surprised by the setback still being absorbed. He isn’t scrambling to find a plan B. Whatever felt like the obvious right answer that didn’t come through, He was not outmaneuvered by its absence.
Prayer
Lord, I bring You this disappointment honestly before I move to strategizing what’s next. Thank You that You are not surprised by what fell through, and You are not scrambling to catch up. Establish my steps even when my own plans don’t land the way I hoped. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
God is not surprised or outmaneuvered by the setback I’m absorbing. He establishes my steps even when my plans don’t come through.
