“For the people had a mind to work.”
Nehemiah 4:6
Nehemiah’s builders worked exhausted. Half of them stood guard with weapons while the other half carried materials, all of them tired, under threat, working with a trowel in one hand and a sword within reach in the other. Nothing about their circumstances was easy.
And yet the wall got built. Not because the exhaustion disappeared, but because presence and commitment continued even while the exhaustion was real. The text doesn’t describe a rested, energized crew accomplishing something impressive. It describes tired people who kept showing up anyway.
A person can be tired, in pain, and still fully present. Still speaking, still good, still meaningfully there for the people and the work in front of them. Presence was never conditional on having full energy for it. That’s worth remembering both for the days someone else needs full strength from you and for the days you’re the one showing up depleted, watching someone else labor through their own exhaustion to be there for you.
Full energy is a nice condition to work from when it’s available. It was never the requirement for showing up well.
Prayer
Lord, on the days I’m tired and depleted, help me trust that presence doesn’t require full energy. Let me keep showing up for what You’ve called me to, even exhausted, the way Nehemiah’s builders did. And give me eyes to notice when others are doing the same for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
I can be tired and still fully present. Presence was never conditional on having full energy for it.
