Before David ever threw a stone, Saul tried to dress him for the fight. Armor, a sword, a bronze helmet — everything a real warrior was supposed to carry into battle against a nine-foot man in full armor.
David tried it on and immediately took it off. He’d never tested it. It wasn’t his. Whatever confidence it might have given someone else, it would have only slowed him down and gotten in the way of what he actually knew how to do.
He went to Goliath with what he’d already proven — a sling, five stones, and a track record with a lion and a bear that nobody else in the army had bothered to ask him about.
Here’s what’s easy to miss in a story this familiar: the size of the giant wasn’t the problem. The problem would have been trying to face a giant that size with someone else’s armor.
The giant in front of you right now — whatever it looks like, whatever’s making your knees genuinely shake about it — is not evidence that you’re unequipped. It’s the exact size of what your trust in God was built to face. Not with borrowed equipment. With what’s actually already proven true in you, in seasons nobody else was watching.
David didn’t need Saul’s armor to be brave. He needed what he already had, and the confidence to trust it instead of trading it in for something that looked more official.
Prayer
Father, thank You that what I’m facing was never a mismatch You didn’t anticipate. Help me stop reaching for armor that isn’t mine and trust what You’ve already proven in me, in the quiet seasons nobody else saw. Give me the courage David had — not because the giant was small, but because he knew exactly who he was standing with. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Declaration
The giant in front of me is not evidence that I’m unequipped. It’s the exact size of what my trust in God was built to face.
