“And I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or look into it… Then I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain.”
Revelation 5:4-6
John’s vision opens with a scroll sealed with seven seals, and a question echoing through heaven and earth: who is worthy to open it? Who has the standing to break the seals and set its contents in motion?
Nobody answers. Not an angel, not a created being anywhere in heaven or on earth or under it. John weeps — loudly, the text says, not quietly. The weight of the moment is real: if no one is worthy, the scroll stays sealed. History stays stuck.
Then someone tells him to stop weeping. Look — the Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered.
And when John looks, expecting a lion, he sees a Lamb. Standing, as though slain.
That’s the answer to the question the whole scene was built around: what actually moves history forward is not power as the world defines it. It’s not the loudest voice or the largest army or the most impressive credentials. It’s worthiness — and worthiness, in this vision, looks like a Lamb who was slain, not a throne seized by force.
None of what looks unrestrained in the world right now is actually outside divine permission. The throne was never vacant. Heaven is not reacting to chaos — it is governing through it, and the One governing is the same Lamb who was worthy when no one else could be found.
That’s worth remembering on the days the news, or the noise, or the sheer scale of what’s wrong in the world makes it feel like nothing is actually in control. Something is. Someone is. And He was worthy before anyone else even had a chance to try.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Lamb who was found worthy when no one else could be. I release my grip on needing to understand or control what feels unrestrained around me. The throne is not empty. You are governing, even now, even here. I trust the One who was slain and is standing. Amen.
Declaration
The throne is not vacant. The Lamb who was worthy is still worthy, and He is governing even what looks unrestrained to me.
