Formed Before Anyone Was Watching

Joseph's power was never born in the palace. What abides in you matters more than what is applauded about you.

“My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”

1 John 2:1

It’s worth noticing what John does with this verse. He doesn’t say the goal is perfect performance, followed by advocacy only if you happen to fail. He assumes failure is part of the story, and builds the whole verse around what’s already in place to meet it: an Advocate, already there, already righteous, already interceding.

That’s a different foundation than most people build their spiritual life on without realizing it. Performance-based faith treats the anointing, the calling, the sense of God’s favor, as something maintained by getting it right. Slip up, and the connection feels like it’s in jeopardy until you can somehow earn it back.

But an anointing rooted in identity works differently. It was never contingent on unbroken performance in the first place — it was formed in a hidden life with God, long before anyone was applauding, long before there was a public platform to protect.

Joseph’s power in Egypt wasn’t born in the palace. It was formed in a pit, in slavery, in a prison cell, in years nobody was watching and nothing looked like it was building toward anything. What abided in him mattered more than what was ever applauded about him — and the abiding came first.

The same is true for whatever you’re carrying. What abides in you — quietly, privately, in the seasons no one sees — matters more than what gets noticed about you. And when you fail, which everyone eventually does, there is already an Advocate in place who was never surprised by it.

Prayer

Father, thank You that what abides in me was formed in hidden seasons, not built on unbroken performance. When I fail, remind me that Jesus is already interceding, already my Advocate, not waiting for me to earn my way back. Let what’s formed in the hidden place matter more to me than what gets applauded. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Declaration

What abides in me matters more than what is applauded about me. My identity was formed before anyone was watching, and it does not depend on unbroken performance.
